About me

Hello and welcome to my website, my name is Graham Hanks and I’m a figurative artist, writer and musician from the Yorkshire town of Doncaster.

After 3 years at Doncaster Art College I left to become a professional sculptor for many years but since 2008 I’ve been concentrating on developing my skills as a painter. Over the years I’ve also worked as a baker, lab technician, film extra and engineer, but the visual arts has always been the mainstay of my career.

I’m very much inspired my the old masters and try to capture something of their technique in my work but interpreted in a more modern way, with simple compositions and hopefully a more up to date approach to light and colour.

I’ve had paintings selected for juried exhibitions, sent paintings to private collections in Canada and America and I’ve been asked to contribute to articles in the Artists & illustrators magazine.

Art Tuition

As well as painting I also teach figurative art and portraiture from my private studio, and have a following of students who regularly attend my weekly classes who have themselves had work accepted to juried exhibitions since coming to my lessons. I love teaching art, it gives me no end of satisfaction watching my students progress and discover their artistic talents. Occasionally I also lead sketching trips to Venice, which is easily my fafourite place to be in the whole world.

Creative Writing

Just recently I’ve started to write and illustrate my own stories, and have begun producing pen & ink illustrations for other authors. Writing is a whole new avenue of self expression for me, and I’m finding it a wonderful and challenging way to create in a non visual way.

I’ve got two Novels in the pipeline at the moment, both set in Fantasy worlds (I get more inspiration from creating worlds than from writing about the one we live in)

As an offshoot of the black & white book illustrations I’m creating, I’ve started on a series of Steampunk inspired illustrations too. I find the whole steampunk culture to be very fascinating, and its imagery just seems to fit the pen & ink techniques I’m working on beautifully.
